National Dance Company Marks World Dance Day with Accra Psychiatric Hospital Inmates
In a heartfelt celebration of World Dance Day, the National Dance Company, a resident group of the National Theatre of Ghana, brought the art of movement to the grounds of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, sharing a day of music, connection, and compassion with staff and patients alike.
The event was more than a performance — it was an act of creative therapy and human connection. Dancers interacted with patients and hospital staff, showcasing the healing power of dance and its ability to unite people from all walks of life.
In a speech delivered on behalf of the Executive Director of the National Theatre, Mr. Henry Malm, he emphasized that:
“Dance is not only a form of artistic expression — it is a powerful catalyst for social cohesion and a vibrant reflection of our heritage. It transforms lives, builds bridges, and brings joy to the human spirit.”
Mr. Malm also highlighted the significance of World Dance Day in recognizing dance’s impact on culture and individual well-being.
The Director of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital expressed keen interest in forging a partnership with the National Theatre to develop ongoing programs that tap into the therapeutic value of dance for mental health and healing.
This unique collaboration underscored the National Theatre’s commitment to community engagement, creative outreach, and social impact.
