National Theatre Signs MOU with Image Bureau for August Staging of “Death and the King’s Horseman”
The National Theatre of Ghana has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Image Bureau and April Communications to co-produce the iconic stage play Death and the King’s Horseman by Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka.
The signing ceremony took place at the National Theatre on Monday, June 23, marking the beginning of what is expected to be one of the most powerful theatre collaborations in recent Ghanaian history.
The play will be staged on August 23 & 24, with encore performances on August 30 & 31, 2025, right at the National Theatre in Accra.
During the ceremony, Acting Executive Director, Mr. Herbert Malm, reaffirmed the Theatre’s commitment to promoting and facilitating top-tier performances that reflect Ghana’s cultural excellence and position the Theatre as a leader in African arts.
“This is the mandate the National Theatre of Ghana has delivered since it opened its doors in 1992. Today’s agreement reaffirms our unwavering support for artistic ingenuity,” Mr. Malm said.
“We call on all theatre-loving individuals and the general public to join us for what promises to be an unforgettable stage experience.”
George Quaye, CEO of Image Bureau, also expressed excitement about the production, noting the ambitious nature of the play and the importance of collaboration:
“This is a difficult and expensive play to execute, but we’re confident in the leadership and support of the National Theatre. Together, we are aiming to produce one of Ghana’s most exceptional stage performances to date.”
“We believe this will redefine theatre in Ghana and across Africa.”
He also revealed that celebrated Ghanaian actor Andrew Tandoh-Adote will play the lead role, raising expectations for a world-class theatrical experience.
This production aligns with the National Theatre’s mission to develop, support, and showcase excellence in the performing arts, while building strategic partnerships that elevate the creative industry.
